“Cookie Bites” - Notes From A Fat Cat’s Journal

March 2021

Day 2920- The humans seem to have caught on to the fact that I am “Portly”.  I have been receiving rations of a low fat food for some time now.  I hear them talking about my weight loss, and how they should not share their cheeses with me anymore.  Personally I don’t agree with the cheeses part, but I do feel lighter in my step.  It hasn’t been easy following such a strict diet, and the exercises have tested my limits, but I think it is really starting to pay off.  I caught a glimps of myself in the mirror yesterday and I’m finally rockin’ an awesome beach body.

A recent study showed that 59 percent of cats and 54 percent of dogs in the United States are overweight.  Those are really high numbers!  Obesity in dogs and cats can lead to diabetes, decreased liver function, decreased tolerance to heat and exercise and strain on joints, bones and ligaments. It can also increase complications for pets going under anesthesia. Most importantly though is that is can decrease the quality and quantity of your pet’s life.

Here are some tips to keep your pet trim and fit:

• Make sure they are eating a food appropriate for their life stage and activity level.

• Measure the amount of food they are receiving daily, and feed according to the feeding guide on the food bag or based on your veterinarian’s advice.

• Avoid excessive treats or table scraps.

• Trade unhealthy treats for healthy ones.  Always consult your veterinarian before giving your pet any treats, to ensure they are safe for consumption.

• Increase your pet’s activity level by encouraging play or going on walks.

Remember to take your pet to the vet every year for a wellness check up, sometimes increased weight can be a sign of underlying disease.
